Massachusetts Port Authority begins operating.
February 17, 1959
Created by the Massachusetts Legislature through the Massachusetts Port Authority Enabling Act in 1956, it is modeled after the New York Port Authority and combines the Port of Boston Commission, State Airport Management Board, and Mystic River Bridge into a single “public instrumentality not subject to the supervision or regulation of the department of public works or of any department, commission, board, bureau, or agency of the commonwealth.”
